Professor of Political Science Jodi Dean recently delivered two invited lectures to international audiences. On Wednesday, May 4, Dean delivered a lecture Communicative Capitalism: This is what Democracy Looks Like to art students and faculty at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.
Dean was invited to the Brera Academy by media activist Franco Bifo Berardi in order to present her theoretical work on the political potential and limitation of networked digital media. Deans lecture was part of a series of lectures on voluntary servitude.
On Thursday, May 19, she gave a lecture The Communist Horizon at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities in London, directed by Costas Douzinas and Slavoj Zizek. The institutes speaker series brings in international theorists working on contemporary political questions. Deans lecture on the communist horizon is part of a book she is working on that argues for the current force of communism as a universal egalitarian force against global capitalism. While in London, Dean was also an invited contributor to a workshop on disobedience at Birkbeck College of Law.
Dean has been with the Colleges since 1993. She received a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. She is a past recipient of the faculty award for scholarship. Dean is also the author of a wide-ranging body of work including Aliens in America: Conspiracy Cultures from Outerspace to Cyberspace and Publicitys Secret: How Technoculture Capitalizes on Democracy. Her most recent books are Democracy and Other Neoliberal Fantasies (Duke University Press 2009) and Blog Theory (Polity 2010).
