William Smith alumna Jacquelyn Litt 80 was recently appointed as the Dean of Douglass Residential College, which is the womens college of Rutgers University. She was formally installed to the position on April 6.
Litt, who earned a B.A. in sociology from William Smith, has most recently been teaching in the Department of Womens and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Previously, she was the founding chair of the Womens and Gender Studies Department at the University of Missouri and has also directed womens studies programs at Iowa State University and Allegheny College.
At the University of Missouri, Litt was known for establishing practices to promote gender equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as providing support for women in senior faculty positions in the same fields. At Iowa State, she earned the Distinguished Faculty Award from the American Association of University Women-Iowa Chapter.
Outside of her teaching acknowledgments, Litts book, Medicalized Motherhood: Perspectives from the Lives of African-American and Jewish Women, earned her the Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship award on race, class, and gender from the American Sociological Association. She also co-authored the book Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework.
After graduating from William Smith, Litt earned her masters and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
