28 April 2011 Civic Leaders Recognized

After this years Book Fest, the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) took some time to recognize student contributions to the office and the Geneva community.

Jean Baptist 14 was named Hobart Tutor of the year. Celeste Smith 12 received the Compass Award for her accomplishments in recruiting volunteers for events, particularly Days of Service; she is the only junior to receive the award.

Several other students were also acknowledged for their dedication to various projects and programs:

-Martha Beltz 11 has been committed to helping out with the Big Brother Big Sister program, as well as participating in alternative spring breaks.

-Lindsey Hagan 11 has worked with young readers through a variety of literacy efforts, from America Reads and Geneva Reads to working at the Book Nook.

-Ryan Kincaid 11 has organized various after-school programs to provide a creative outlet for kids when the school day is done, as well as helped with important planning aspects in the office.

-Lily Farnham 11 has been a tireless advocate for local children through Jumpstart and Geneva Head Start since her first year on campus.

-Caleb Campbell 11 has been a leading proponent of CCESL and role model for civic leadership through a number of programs and campus positions, such as What Do You Stand For at Orientation and working at the Geneva Community Center.

-Sarah Gall 11 has balanced her time as an athlete on campus and as a member and co-chair of Geneva Heroes.

-Paul Marshall 11 has worked with America Counts and been a tutor and coordinator on successful family engagement strategies.

-Amanda Ward 11 has been an advocate for political awareness and participation among students, as well as worked with Invisible Children; she will go to Memphis for two years with Teach for America after graduation.

-Dan Boysen 11 has worked as a Jumpstart Geneva Corps Member while also working to recruit many students for Days of Service, the Community Lunch Program, and the Holiday Gift Program.

-Anna Hineline 11 has been a part of What Do You Stand For and worked with many programs, such as the Civic Leadership Puzzle.

Im honored to take this time to pause and reflect on your individual and collective impact, said Katie Flowers, director of CCESL. Its been a remarkable year; CCESL couldnt accomplish anything without you.
