Fred Matt 81 returned for reunion, he had a case of the companys Saranac beer in tow and hosted a beer tasting for fellow alums. At the time, he also spoke to them about a fire that head broken out at the one of the companys canning operations buildings:
When the fire was blazing, I was standing on the roof of another building looking down at the flames, said Matt. There was a rainbow stretching across the sky and ending right in the burning building. It reminded me of the saying, Theres gold at the end of every rainbow.' With his eyes on a brighter and brighter future for his familys brewing company, Matt concluded that, We really view the accident as an adversity that will become an opportunity for us.
The brighter and brighter future for his company now includes the ability to produce its own energy. Three years after that campus visit, WKTV News reported the brewery will generate between 30 and 40 percent of its own electricity.

F.X. Matt Brewery to go off the grid and produce its own energy

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) The F.X. Matt Brewery is taking itself off the grid.
The brewery is implementing a new system that will take the waste from its products to generate energy.
The process is expected to not only help the brewery go green, but save some green as well. Theyll generate between 30 and 40 percent of their own electricity. They expect to clean up most of the waste water as well.
Federal stimulus and some state funds are helping to pay for the project, but the big pay off is that the project essentially pays for itself in a matter of years.
Were excited, because one of the things we deal with in this facilitythis is not a brand new facility and for us to try and clean up our own energy and become more greenthats exciting for us, said Nick Matt, Chairman and CEO of the brewery.
The project is expected to get under way this summer and be in full swing by autumn.
