William Bill Yaffa 73, P01, senior vice president of BMT Commodity Corp., has spent more than 45 years working as an importer and distributor of raw materials that are environmentally friendly. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Yaffa has been working to redirect virus guard fabrics and barrier screens to those who manufacture masks and face shields for front-line medical workers.
Time is of the essence to get our fabrics to the right parties who can convert them into masks and barrier screens, says Yaffa, of his work at BMT, an international merchant and distributor specializing in natural, biodegradable and environmentally friendly products used in a variety of markets.
With the COVID-19 outbreak leading to a shortage of necessities for medical professionals, a number of companies are coming together with their infrastructure and expertise to create supplies. BMT, which sells AllergyGuard and VirusGuard Fabric that block most bacteria and allergens, is hoping to partner with companies who can make masks and barrier screens to fight COVID-19.
We have enjoyed a very enthusiastic response from many parties in the short period of time since becoming involved in the mask and barrier screen fabric market, Yaffa says. We all look forward to better days ahead.

At Hobart and William Smith, Yaffa majored in history, was goalie for the soccer team and sports editor for the yearbook. Following graduation, he taught history and economics for a year at his alma mater, the Dwight-Englewood School, before joining his fathers importing company, Hanson & Orth, Inc., in Darien, Conn. After working there for 14 years, the company was sold, and Yaffa stayed on with the new owner, Harrison & Crosfield. He has served as senior vice president at BMT Commodity since 1989.
