5 March 2019 Wickenden 76, L.H.D. 14 to Receive Keeper of the Flame Award

On Friday, March 8, in celebration of International Womens Day, the National Womens Hall of Fame will present its Keeper of the Flame award to Executive Editor ofThe New Yorkerand former Hobart and William Smith Colleges Trustee Dorothy H. Wickenden 76, L.H.D. 14.

The presentation is part of the Halls 2019 induction announcement ceremony, which will begin at 6 p.m. at Lotte New York Palace in Manhattan. The ceremony will feature a special appearance by Hall inducteeDonna de Varona, Olympic gold medalist swimmer, renowned TV sportscaster, and champion for expanding womens opportunities in sports. De Varona will deliver remarks and read the list of 2019 Hall inductees.

The Keeper of the Flame award, which the Hall established in 2005, honors distinguished women within communities around the country who have not been inducted to the Hall. The award takes its name from the 1977 relay race from Seneca Falls to the site of that years National Womens Conference in Houston, a distance of 2,600 miles. A torch with a symbolic flame was passed between more than 1,000 runners, including de Varona. This same torch will be passed to Wickenden, the 2019 Keeper of the Flame.

Wickenden went on to serve as national affairs editor ofNewsweekbefore moving toThe New Yorkerin 1995. In addition to her role as executive editor, which she has held since 1996, she is the moderator ofThe New Yorkers weekly podcast, The Political Scene. Wickenden will deliver the 2019 Hobart and William Smith Commencement address.
