Emmy Award-winning 60 Minutes correspondent and HWS Trustee Bill Whitaker 73, L.H.D. 97was honored with the Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment Award from the Radio Television Digital News Foundation.
At the RTDNFs annual First Amendment Awards dinner on March 14, Whitaker was recognized for his major contributions to the protection of First Amendment freedoms. He joins the esteemed ranks of past Zeidenberg recipients, including Walter Cronkite, Lester Holt, Diane Sawyer, Mike Wallace and Judy Woodruff.
In a 2016 profile, theLos Angeles Times wrote thatobserving people is a passion for Whitaker, 65, who has made the most of his chance to do it in-depth on 60 Minutes, where pieces running 10 minutes or longer still prevail in the era of viewers devouring video snippets on their smartphones. In his second season, he had 20 original stories on the program, the most of any correspondent.
Whitakers thorough reporting on the recent 60 Minutes segment The Swiss Leaks, about the biggest data breach in Swiss banking history, earned him and his colleagues a 2016 Emmy Award for Outstanding Business and Economic Reporting in a News Magazine.
Prior to joining 60 Minutes, Whitaker spent 30 years with CBS News, covering three presidential campaigns, the O.J. Simpson case, overseas wars and events, and interviewing national figures, including First Lady Michelle Obama.
