4 October 2018 Wager 09 Joins Davis Gallery
As the Colleges new Clarence A. Dave Davis 48 Visual Arts Curator, Anna Wager 09 returns to Houghton House to oversee the exhibition space of the Department of Art and Architecture and the expansive Collections of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Wager joins HWS from Seattle, where she received a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 19th-century English and American art and textual and digital studies. Her dissertation, titled Kindred Spirits:Communal Making and Religious Revival in Arts and Crafts Movements and research has been supported by fellowships at the Boston Athenaeum, Columbia University and the Rare Book School at UVA. She has held curatorial fellowships at the Seattle Art Museum, Delaware Art Museum and Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, and has taught courses on Victorian art and science, Gilded Age art, print culture and book history. She has an M.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington.
During her time at William Smith, Wager majored in art history, studied abroad in Norwich, England and completed her Honors thesis, Within and Beyond Convent Walls: Nuns, Widows, and Art Patronage in Renaissance Italy, under the guidance of Professor Emerita of Art History Elena Ciletti.
Wagers appointment coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the Davis Gallery at Houghton House, a gift of Clarence A. Davis 48. Presenting six shows each year, the gallery provides an environment for studying the role of art and architecture in shaping, embodying and interpreting cultures.
