25 October 2019 Statesmen Storm Past Pioneers

The Hobart College soccer team defeated Utica 3-0 on a rainy night at Gaetano Stadium. The Statesmen wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 11-4-1 overall record.

The Pioneers (9-5-2) had the games first scoring opportunities. In the fifth minute, Thomas Muller fired a shot from 20 yards out that was turned aside byBrian Salazar. In the 13th minute, Sean Weaver had a shot punched aside by Salazar at the last second.

Hobart scored three goals in a four minute span to secure the victory. The Statesmen opened the scoring in the 18th minute on juniorKyle Mangoldsfourth goal of the season. He collected a pass from seniorNate Caryinside the 18-yard box and slid a shot past Nick Spooner. The Statesmen doubled their lead just under two minutes later. JuniorJuan Widoycovichconverted on a free kick from 20 yards out. Following a Utica foul, he bent a shot around the Utica wall and into the lower right corner of the cage. Hobart added an insurance goal in the 22nd minute. SeniorBinjo Emmanuelconverted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season.

Utica came out of the halftime break and produced the first two chances of the second half. Thomas Muller had a shot from 23-yards out turned aside by Salazar. Brady Maloney chipped the rebound just over the crossbar. JuniorAugust Martinihad Hobarts best chance of the second half but his shot was smothered by Chris Rosato.

The Statesmen finished the game with a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

SeniorBrian Salazarplayed 82 minutes in goal for Hobart and made four saves. SophomoreVictor Rocckiplayed the final eight minutes in goal. Nick Spooner and Chris Rosato split time in goal for Utica. Spooner made one save and Rosato made two.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they welcome Bard to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
