5 January 2018 Statesmen, Herons Basketball Face Matchups on the Road

Basketball2The Hobart and William Smith basketball teams play two Liberty League road games this weekend against Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Ithaca College.

William Smith (6-3, 0-2 Liberty) returns to the court at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, when the Herons visit RIT. The Statesmen (6-3, 1-1) will also travel to RIT on Friday. The contest is set to tipoff at 8 p.m. The Herons will continue their momentum on the road with a game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, against Ithaca College. The Statesmen face the Bombers at 4 p.m.

The Herons are coming off a 64-51 non-conference win over Hamilton on Jan. 2 in Bristol Gym. William Smith served the Continentals (9-2) their second loss this season.

Guard Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou 21 produced a season-high 15 points to lead four William Smith players in double figures. She was 4-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Mia Morrison 19 logged 13 points and Natalia Baum 19 added 11 points. Kendra Quinn-Moultrie 18 also scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Basketball3With the first five points of the fourth quarter, the Continentals trimmed their deficit to just four, but the Herons countered with a 7-2 burst, capped by a 3-pointer from Dimitrakopoulou, to expand the William Smith lead to 52-43 with five minutes remaining. The Herons pushed their lead into double digits for good with about three and a half minutes left.

The Statesmen last played on Dec. 30. Hobart faced Randolph-Macon College in the championship game of the R-MC Coaches Tournament sponsored by Kay Jewelers after defeating Rowan University 84-79 in their first game of the tournament. Randolph-Macon slipped past Hobart in the final minutes of the game to earn a 59-57 win.

Forward Sam Allen 20 and Colin Dougherty 19 both scored 12 points to lead Hobart. Allen led the Statesmen on the glass with a game-high eight board and Dougherty handed out a game-high four assists. Jamal Lucas 19 contributed 10 points. Coupled with his double-double in the win over Rowan, Lucas earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Earlier this week, guard Dan Masino 21 was named the Liberty League Mens Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week and Lucas earned a spot on the conferences weekly honor roll. Masino averaged 10.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 3.0 apg in the Randolph-Macon Tournament, while Lucas averaged 14.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg on the weekend.
