20 April 2020 • Athletics Six HWS Sailors Named to All-Conference Teams
Six members of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team were named to the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) all-conference teams. Senior and economics major Kyle Easton highlighted the selections, earning the MAISA Sportsperson of the Year award.
In addition, Easton was named to the all-conference coed skippers second team. Senior and economics major Hector Guzman was named to the all-conference first team for the fourth straight year. Senior and English and philosophy double major Kate Cox earned a spot on the All-MAISA Womens Skipper first team for the second consecutive year. Senior and economics major Maya Weber, junior and writing and rhetoric major Aidan Morgan and sophomore Sarah Smith were tabbed All-MAISA Crews.
Easton competed in 11 regattas this year. In the spring, he helped HWS win the George Washington Team Race and finish second at the John Jackson Team Race. This fall, Easton helped HWS win the Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta and the David Lee Arnoff Trophy, sailing in A Division.
The MAISA Sportsperson of the Year is awarded to the sailor that best exemplifies the Corinthian ideals of sailing, notably during on-the-water competition. In addition, the sailor has made contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts, by competing, promoting the sport, fostering sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition and contributing to the overall performance of college sailing.
Guzman competed in eight regattas this year. Along with Easton, he guided the Colleges to a victory at the GW Team Race and a second place finish at the John Jackson Team Race to open the spring season. This fall, Guzman steered the Colleges to a third place finish at the MAISA match race championship. He led HWS to a victory at the Cayuga Lake Invitational.
Cox sailed in five regattas in 2019-20. She placed second in A Division at the MAISA Womens Fall Dinghy Championship, sailing with Audrey Morin and Anna Flaherty. The Herons placed third overall with 103 points. Cox also guided William Smith to a third place finish at the Women's Showcase Tournament. Sailing with Morin, she was second in A Division. This spring, she paced William Smith to an eighth place finish at the Navy Spring Womens regatta.
Weber earned a spot on the All-MAISA Crews for the fourth straight year. The Amherst, N.Y., native competed in eight regattas this year. Weber competed as crew, helping HWS win the George Washington Team Race and finish second in the John Jackson Team Race to open the spring season. She also helped HWS finish third at the MAISA Match Race Championship.
Morgan garners all-conference praise for the first time in his career. The Shady Side, Md., native competed in seven regattas this year. Morgan was a part of this spring's team race squad. He opened the 2019-20 campaign by finishing first at the Jack Boehringer Memorial Regatta and the David Lee Arnoff Trophy. Morgan sailed with Easton in A Division in both regattas.
Smith also earned all-conference praise for the first time. A native of Norfolk, Va., she competed in seven regattas in 2019-20. This spring, she competed as crew as part of the Colleges' team racing squad. This fall, Smith helped HWS win the David Lee Arnoff Trophy. She sailed in B Division with fellow sophomore Jake Vickers. Vickers, Smith and sophomore Aaron Tsuchitori finished fourth in B Division at the David Lee Arnoff Regatta.
