28 August 2018 RenovatedFGI Center Opens Following Design Challenge

FGI Renovations 2This spring, the HWS First Generation Initiative (FGI) announced its Design Challenge to reimagine the FGI Center on the ground floor of Sherrill Hall. Open to all HWS first-generation students, either individually or as groups, the competition challenged entrants to submit a to-scale design, a design rationale and an itemized budget with a $2,500 limitfor their ideal vision of therenovations.

With their winning design, Tiffany Green 21 and Ash Rahman 21 proposed a large study space equipped with moving tables as well as a lounging space with a kitchen area and comfortable seating.

Green was inspired by a conference she participated in at Stanford University as part of the FGI. At Stanford, she explains, she toured the universitys public student spaces. During the redesign, I wanted to make sure that the FGI Center was made to be as welcoming as possible so that more people would enjoy having the opportunity to come and utilize the Center.

Green was able to bring those ideas to life with the help of Rahman, who offered an important counterpoint to her vision of the redesign, Green says. I was also grateful for his help with the technological aspect of the redesign, she adds, noting that Rahman was the point person in laying out the floor plan.

Renovations for the Center, which were undertaken in June, were completed by FGI Director and Professor of Chemistry Christine de Denus P22, as well as the FGI summer interns, Green, Josh Hylkema 21 and Kels Veeder 21.
