The Capital Youth Empowerment Program (CYEP) recently recognized President Gregory J. Vincent 83 with the Champion of Change Award, which honors individuals whose talent and commitment in their fields have resulted in a lasting and inspiring impact on their communities.
Dr. Vincent was specifically selected for his extraordinary accomplishments in education and civil rights, and his long demonstrated commitment to equality, diversity and social justice, says Hon. Ludwig P. Gaines 88, immediate past chair of the CYEP Board of Directors, who presented Vincent with the award.
The awards ceremony came during the eighth annual CYEP Summer Event, which Gaines hosted at his home on Marthas Vineyard, where Vincent and his wife Kim were greeted by HWS community members including Trustee Linda Arrington 88, Paula P17 and Mark Skip Darden 87, P17, Al Flowers 91, Derrick McDaniel 90, Rick Wallace 91 and Andrea Yizar 87.
This award is humbling and especially meaningful, coming from an organization that does so much for the health and wellbeing for so many young people, families and their communities, says Vincent. I am honored to be counted among this years distinguished recipients and those who have preceded us.
CYEP is an award-winning Washington D.C.-area nonprofit that seeks to uplift communities and families, including youth in need, through unique parenting classes and programming that address fatherhood and teen HIV/AIDS and pregnancy prevention. This year, CYEP also conferred the Champion of Change Award on Kevin Liles, music executive and entrepreneur, and Harry Seymour, an award-winning artist and retired Professor Emeritus of Speech and Hearing Science at UMass Amherst.
A national expert on civil rights, social justice and campus culture,Vincentpreviously served at The University of Texas at Austin as Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement, W.K. Kellogg Professor of Community College Leadership and Professor of Law. His extensive career is distinguished by his commitment to equity and justice, both in education and in the wider public arena.
Vincent is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as national chair of the Commission on Racial Justice. He is a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boul) where he serves as the Grand Sire Archon-Elect (President-Elect). He earned a law degree from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and his doctorate from The University of Pennsylvania.
