Panel to Discuss First Native American-Owned Art Gallery
6 January 2021 Panel to Discuss First Native American-Owned Art Gallery
On Jan. 28, Art Director Brooke Leboeuf 01, Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Angelique Szymanek, artist and member of the Heron Clan of the Seneca Nation G. Peter Jemison L.H.D. 20 and gallery owner and founder Dave Kimelberg will participate in a discussion about the first Native American-owned commercial art gallery in the country.
A new commercial art gallery that solely showcases the work of nationally renowned Native contemporary artists has multiple connections to the Colleges. A virtual panel to discuss those connections will take place on Thursday, Jan. 28.
Brooke Fitzpatrick Leboeuf 01 serves as the artistic director of K Art, located in the K Haus development in the historic Allentown district of Buffalo, N.Y. The gallery is the first of its kind in the country owned by a Native American and solely showcasing the artwork of national-level Native contemporary artists.
Sponsored by the Office of Alumni and Alumnae Relations, the panel will be hosted by Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Angelique Szymanek, a classmate of Leboeufs at the University of Buffalo. K Art owner and founder Dave Kimelberg, who is a member of the Bear Clan of the Seneca Nation, will also participate in the conversation.
Rounding out the panel is artist, member of the Heron Clan of the Seneca Nation and leading authority on Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) history G. Peter Jemison L.H.D. 20. A classically trained painter, Jemison works in a range of media paint, printmaking, lithography, woodcuts and film exploring political and social subjects as well as his own relationship with the natural world.
Leboeuf, who earned a degree in art history and a masters in art history from the University of Buffalo, leads the curation of artists and their works for the gallerys ongoing rotating exhibitions. She previously served as project coordinator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and managed two privately held collections.
We are excited to offer this wonderful program to our alumni, alumnae, parents as friends as part of the Colleges overall recognition of our history, and the history and culture of the place the Colleges call home, says Director of Alumni and Alumnae Relations Chevanne DeVaney 95, P21, P23. Were thrilled to have Brooke, Dave, Peter and Angel as partners on this journey.
