14 January 2021 • Athletics Montgomery '21 Named Preseason All-American

William Smith College senior defender Mekayla Montgomery was recently named a preseason All-American by US Lacrosse Magazine.

Montgomery, a psychology and education double major, was one of just 13 selections across all of NCAA Division III women's lacrosse and one of only four defenders to earn the preseason accolades. A 2020 Inside Lacrosse first team All-American, she started all five games last season. Montgomery led the team with 19 draw controls, had 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. She won a season-high 10 draws in the Herons 18-3 win over Oswego. She scooped up seven ground balls in the season opener against Geneseo and caused a season-high three turnovers in the finale against Dickinson.

A two-time IWLCA All-American, Montgomery has played in 44 career games, recording 11 points on eight goals and three assists. The 2019 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, she holds William Smith's game, season and career records for draw controls. Montgomery has won 179 career draws despite playing 19 fewer games than the previous record holder. She won 93 draws in 2019 shattering Lucy Johnson's record of 72 from the 2012 season. Montgomery won 11 draws in a win at Vassar in 2019. Her 10 wins against the Lakers from 2020 are second on the list. Montgomery is fifth in program history with 83 caused turnovers. In addition, she has scooped up 122 ground balls.

William Smith was 3-2 when the remainder of the 2020 season was canceled. The Herons were 2-0 at home, knocking off Oswego 18-3 and Nazareth 13-3. William Smith was ranked No. 19 in the final IWLCA poll of the 2020 season.
