27 October 2017 Miller Named Interim Director of Hobart Athletics

Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Gregory J. Vincent 83 announced that Associate Athletic Director Brian Miller will serve as interim director of Hobart athletics. He will assume his new duties in January following the retirement of Mike Hanna 68 at the end of the fall semester.

Mikes leadership has not only shaped generations of Statesmen including me but also countless coaches and administrators, Vincent says. Thats one of many reasons that Im confident Brian is the right person for this role. Im grateful to him for his willingness to step up and lead Hobart Athletics while we search for Mikes successor.

Since 2009, Miller has served as the Colleges NCAA compliance coordinator, overseeing rules compliance for all 23 varsity programs. His duties include educating coaches, staff, student-athletes, alumni, alumnae and boosters on NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations as they pertain to athletics. Additionally, Miller handles scheduling for all home and away contests and the use of HWS athletics facilities.

We are fortunate to have a person of Brians caliber and dedication who is so well respected by our student athletes, coaches and the athletic administrators in our leagues, says Vice President for Campus Life Robb Flowers. Brian will serve Hobart College very well in this role and Im grateful for his leadership.

Miller is a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance and serves as the Liberty League administrative liaison for compliance and mens and womens basketball.

Im tremendously honored to serve as Hobarts interim director of athletics, Miller says. I understand the tremendous responsibility that accompanies this position. Following in the footsteps of long-time successful ADs like Coach Hanna, Bill Stiles and Babe Kraus will be no easy task. Thankfully, with our existing staff and a strong culture already in place, Hobart athletics will continue to thrive and succeed moving forward.

I thank President Vincent and Vice President Robb Flowers for putting their trust in me to guide the department through this transitional period, Miller says.

Miller came to HWS following nearly a decade of experience in the athletics department at DYouville College. He served as the Spartans mens basketball head coach, associate director of athletics and director of athletics. Miller coordinated compliance, recruiting and scheduling for all of DYouvilles teams, in addition to his coaching duties.

On the hardwood, Miller guided the Spartans to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in 2002-03 and the NEAC regular season title the following season. He was twice named the leagues Coach of the Year.

Miller also served as an assistant mens basketball coach at Canisius College, contributing to all aspects of the Division I program.

A 1988 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Miller earned a bachelors degree in mass communication. He earned a masters degree in sports administration from Canisius in 2002.
