30 November 2018 Merkley+Partners Provides Look at Mercedes Benz USA

During her internship as a media planner with New York City-based Merkley+Partners, Madison Maher 19 caught a glimpse into the world of advertising, and helped solidify her future career plans.

This internship was a crucial step in my job search process and post-graduation plans, says Maher, who worked on the media planning team for Mercedes Benz USA. The experience gave me a chance to see different departments within an agency and choose which ones I might like to pursue in the future.

At Merkley+Partners, a mid-sized, full service advertising agency run by CEO Alexander Gellert 86, Maher worked with HWS alums Lucy Carr 17 and Anna Worcester 18 to help allocate Mercedes media budget between various media, including television commercials, radio ads and digital ads.

Throughout the 10-week internship, Maher and fellow interns also developed a faux business pitch which they presented to agency supervisors and chief officers. While her team lost the pitch, the project as a whole and presenting was my favorite part of the summer, says Maher.

Maher also had an opportunity to work with the broadcasting and production teams on commercial edits, and spoke with actor Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame, while he recorded a voice over for a Mercedes commercial.

Mahers experience with the broadcasting and production teams helped her realize just how vast the field of advertising is.

I discovered I am interested in joining a broadcasting team as a career, she says. To my surprise, this internship also gave me a new bout of confidence to network and take opportunities that I didnt even know I had before.

A native of Geneva, Maher is a recipient of the Geneva Scholarship Associates endowed scholarship and spent the previous summer interning with Genevas City Hall. On campus, she is a member of the William Smith cross country team and the Writing Colleagues Program, works at Discoverys Playground, and is a writer forThe Odyssey, an online newspaper.
