Annie Mandart 14, of Niagara Piece Project, will be featured in WNEDs Horizons Gallery June 14 through July 30. Mandart is a self-taught modern quilter who started the craft in the fall of 2017. The PBS show will feature eight of Mandarts quilts and a handful of quilted tote bags with varying designs.
The show is titled, The Honey Bees at Mas House and will include pieces inspired by the women who came before Mandart. She incorporates traditional fabrics into old, new and original patterns to honor the women who have shaped the textile arts field for years.
A self-taught quilter, Mandart uses the sewing skills she learned from her mother to create her work. Mandarts style focuses on bright colors, complex layouts and geometric shapes to create functional art. She currently serves as the academic services coordinator for institutional effectiveness at Daemen College.
At HWS, Mandart received her bachelors of arts in writing and rhetoric and womens studies with a concentration in discourses on womens health. She was the editor-in-chief of the Herald and landed an internship in Chennai, India, with 2adpro Media Solutions Private Limited, an international advertising agency that was co-founded by Todd Brownrout 84, a former editor-in-chief of the Herald.
Mandart also received the Charles H. Salisbury Summer International Internship Stipend Award. She used her stipend to travel to Beijing, China, where she worked for Zinch, a social networking company that connects students to colleges and scholarships in the United States and Asia.
The opening reception for The Honey Bees at Mas House is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14 at WNED studios, 140 Lower Terrace in Buffalo. The free exhibition at Horizons Gallery is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free parking is available in the stations parking lot off Charles Street.
