18 June 2018 • Alums Mackie '77 Receives Environmental Award

Thomas A. Mackie ’77, an environmental lawyer and managing shareholder of Mackie Shea, PC law firm has been chosen by the Environmental Business Council (EBC) of New England to receive the Stephen G. Lewis Environmental-Energy Merit Award for Service to the Environmental Industry.  The award recognizes meritorious service, leadership and dedication to improving the quality of the environment and the development of the environmental industry in New England.

Mackie has provided advice to businesses and municipalities facing complex environmental issues for more than 35 years. His work focuses on successful siting and permitting of renewable energy, recycling, waste handling and landfill facilities. Much of his work involves developing strategies for reconciling facility siting with community needs, which paves the way for facility development and expansion. He has litigated many permit appeals and related matters, and has led the environmental due diligence in several major environmental industry corporate acquisitions and divestitures.

Mackie has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for Expertise in Environmental Law since 2006. The list, which is compiled based on peer-review evaluation, is the oldest and one of the most respected peer-review publications in the legal profession. Mackie’s law firm has been recognized as a leader in environmental law in several publications including, U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms.” The firm was ranked Tier 1 for both Environmental Law and Environmental Litigation in the Boston metropolitan area for 2018. The firm also ranked Tier 2 nationally for Environmental Law and Environmental Litigation.

Additionally, Mackie serves as chair of the board of directors of the Environmental Business Council and is on the boards of the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden and Keep Massachusetts Beautiful. He is the author of the “Solid Waste Law and Regulation” chapter in Massachusetts Environmental Law, and has chaired or served as a panelist on numerous committees and seminars on environmental issues for the Environmental Business Council of New England, Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education.

Mackie received his B.S. in biology from Hobart, and was a member of the Statesmen JV soccer team and Kappa Alpha Society. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
