29 May 2020 • Athletics Lucchesi '20 Signs with Chesapeake Bayhawks

Hobart College senior goalie Sam Lucchesi signed with the Chesapeake Bayhawks, the MLL franchised announced this evening.

A media and society major, Lucchesi was the sixth pick of the fourth round, 24th overall. Bayhawks Head Coach Tom Mariano is excited about adding the Garden City native to the roster and praised his Hobart career. "Pumped to add Sam to #HawkNation great college career and he has the skill set to translate to the pro level. #wall #Lastline," Mariano tweeted.

Lucchesi was 4-1 this season. He ranked seventh in the nation in saves per game (13.8) and 15th in save percentage (.566). Lucchesi earned the NEC Defensive Player of the Week Award for his 10-save effort against Canisius and was tabbed a NEC Prime Performer following a season-high 18-save game against Colgate.

In 33 career games, Lucchesi was 17-13 with a .518 save percentage and a 10.46 goals against average. Among Division I Statesmen, he is third in career wins, fifth in career GAA, seventh in career saves (335) and 10th in career save percentage.

Hobart led the nation in scoring offense, averaging 19.6 goals per game, this season. The Statesmen were 4-1 with wins over Binghamton, Canisius, Colgate and Siena. The team's lone loss was to Syracuse, which was No. 1 in the final coaches poll of the season.

Since the MLL was founded in 2001, Hobart has had nine players drafted in its collegiate draft. The first Statesman drafted was Tim Booth (2003, 5th round, 26th overall pick) followed by Brian Joy (2004/5th/26th), Daryl Veltman (2008/4th/39th), Bobby Dattilo (2012/4th/25th), Alex Love (2015/5th/33rd), Frank Brown (2017/7th/58th), and Chris Aslanian (2019/2nd/18th). This season, Lucchesi and classmate Eric Holden (2020/5th/29th) were both selected in the MLL Collegiate Draft.

The Bayhawks won the 2019 MLL Championship, defeating the Denver Outlaws 10-9 in Denver.
