10 July 2019 Legal Primer in Geneva for Dow '21
Willa Dow '21 is exploring a wide swath of the legal field this summer as an intern with Geneva City Court Judge, the Hon. Timothy J. Buckley.
A double major in French and Francophone studies and international relations, Dow splits her time between the courthouse and the judge's private practice, sitting in on meetings with clients, meeting with the defender and public prosecutor and developing a familiarity and understanding with legal vocabulary and processes.
"You are constantly challenged," she says, noting the fast learning curve in the courtroom. "Although it's hard and frustrating at times not always understanding what everything means, you're pushed everyday."
Seeing client interactions in person at Buckley's office which specializes in elder law, estate planning and real estate and court proceedings unfold, Dow has found herself more and more interested in the details, "which has made me much more confident in pursuing law."
Dow was offered the internship after consultations with the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education. Through the Colleges' Guaranteed Internship Program, Dow navigated the process of "matching my interests with an internship opportunity" and earned a stipend and guaranteed housing, available for students interning in Geneva who complete the Pathways Program.
"We benefit so much from the people in the community, and staying during the summer and either interning or volunteering allows you to do something valuable that gives back to this region and immerse with the community," says Dow.
On campus, Dow is a member of the Model African Union and works in the Office of Admissions. She tutors at the Boys & Girls Club of Geneva and has worked as an intern at the HWS Fribolin Farm.
