Known as the Liberty League Rookie of the Year as a first-year Heron, Anne Kietzman 13 recently adopted a new title: head coach of the womens field hockey team at Washington College in Chestertown, Md. Kietzman, who leads the Division III team this season, is the fourth head coach in the history of the program.

Im looking forwardto buildinga program that consistently competes on a national level, Kietzman says. I have a vision for this program that extends beyond competitive success, where each player maximizes their potential not just as hockey players but as students and citizens.

Kietzmans drive and passion for the game and dedication for athletes well-being traits that evolved during her years on the William Smith field hockey team distinguished her among a competitive applicant pool, says Thad Moore, director of athletics at Washington College.

While at HWS, Kietzman says she was shaped by the passion of friends, campus leaders and faculty like Assistant Professor of Music Charity Lofthouse.

I remembersitting in a class with Professor Lofthouse and she made us feel like there wasnt anywhere else she would rather be than teaching music early on a Friday morning, Kietzman says. I realized I felt that same way about field hockey and collegiateathletics, and thought I should give coaching a shot.

As a Heron, Kietzman was named the Liberty Leagues offensive player of year, played on the leagues all-tournament team twice and earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2012 when the Herons won the leagues championship. A native of Longmeadow, Mass., she majored in biology and minored in cognition, logic and language as a Heron.

To this day I still have a really hard time articulating how meaningful my time as an athlete at William Smith wasand how grateful I am to have had Sally [Scatton] and Sophie [Riskie 07] as coaches. That experiencevery much informsthe way I coach and the type of culture I want to build at Washington.
