10 November 2016 HWS Sailing Teams Qualify for Championship

After outstanding performances by the Hobart and William Smith sailing teams at the MAISA fall championships, both teams have qualified for nationals. HWS will compete at the ICSA Match Race National Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 17-20 and the Herons will compete in the Atlantic Coast Womens Championship at the College of Charleston on Nov. 11-13.

The HWS team of Noah Barrengos 18, Sam Hallowell 17, Greiner Hobbs 18 and Maya Weber 20, worked together to win the Colleges first MAISA Match Race Championship in Kings Point, N.Y., and secured their place in the San Diego races. Through heavy winds that ranged between 18-30 knots, the team was able to complete one round robin and the semifinal knockout round with a 5-2 overall record and claimed the 16th conference championship for the HWS sailing team.

Meanwhile, in Norfolk, Va., the Heron sailors finished third in the MAISA Womens Fall Championship and solidified their place in the Atlantic Coast Womens Championship in Charleston, N.C. Christine Moloney 17, Erin Condon 17, Bailey Carter 19, Emily Lorimer 20, Kate Cox 20 and Sinead McManus 20 had nine top-five finishes, including a pair of wins.

Lorimer, a first year on the team this year, says the effort the team has made, in the gym and on the water can be seen in their results. She also believes their performance thus far is just a sneak peek at what they can accomplish in the championships.
