Hobart and William Smith Colleges Head Sailing CoachScott Ikl 84was named the 2018 Sail1Design/Gill Coach of the Year. He guided the Colleges to three top 4 finishes at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association national championships this spring. In addition, Ikl recently had six sailors named ICSA All-Americans.
In his 25th season at the helm of the sailing program, Ikl guided HWS to third place finishes at the ICSA Sperry Womens National Championship and the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship as well as a fourth place effort at the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship. He has directed the Colleges to 65 ICSA national championship berths, finishing in the top five 26 times, including the 2005 team race and coed national championships.
Ikl also led HWS to the 2018 MAISA Womens Championship, the programs 16th MAISA title on his watch.
Ikls mentorship resulted in a program record six All-Americans this spring. Greiner Hobbs 18was a finalist for the Everett Morris Memorial Trophy as the Marlow Ropes College Sailor of the Year and Bailey Carter 19became the programs first ICSA All-American Womens Skipper. In his career, Ikl has overseen the development of 61 All-Americans, including 2007 Morris Trophy winner and 2012 Olympian Trevor Moore 07.
In addition to Carter, Hobbs and Hector Guzman 20 were named to the ICSA Coed All-American Skippers team while Haley Okun 18, Lindsey Kloc 19 and Maya Weber 20 earned spots on the ICSA All-America crew team.
Hobbs was the 2018 MAISA Coed Sailor of the Year, Carter was the MAISA Womens Sailor of the Year, and Ikl earned the MAISA Coach of the Year award.
Widely respected for his coaching talents, Ikl has earned the Graham Hall Award for outstanding service by a college sailing professional (2014), US SAILINGs Doc Counsilman Science Award (2006), National Coach of the Year Award (2003), and Developmental Coach of the Year Award (1998). In addition, Ikl has served the sport of sailing as a US SAILING certified judge, president of the American 505 Class, and board member of various junior sailing associations. Hes also a frequent contributor to Sailing World magazine.
An experienced sailor, Ikl has won numerous regatta championships on the International, North American, National, and District levels in various different classes, including the Laser, 49er, Lightning, 505, FD, One Ton, International Fifty Foot, Mum 30, and Maxi Classes. An accomplished fleet racer, hes had international success in match and team racing.
