26 October 2018 HWS Ensembles Present Fall Concert

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges vocal ensembles Chorale and Cantori will present their annual fall concert on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The Chorale, accompanied by chamber orchestra, will perform George Frideric HandelsThe Ways of Zion Do Mourn.Cantoriwill perform works by Sweelinck, Viadana, and J.M. Bach; in addition, the community-based chamber ensemble Seneca Camerata will perform music by Henry Purcell.

Directed by Professor of Music Bob Cowles, the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in St. Johns Chapel. Admission is free and open to the public; donations will be gratefully accepted.

The performance will commemorate the life of Robert Bob Barbuto 94, Applied Instructor of Music and Director of the Colleges Jazz Ensemble. A talented musician and public servant, Barbuto served in the U.S. Army as a member of the prestigious West Point Band and Army/Air Force Jazz Bands, as well as performed with notable artists such as Nick Brignola, Charlie Ventura and Bill Tillman among other greats.

Chorale is a mixed ensemble comprising the finest student vocal talent on campus. The 35-voice group performs a wide range of a cappella choral literature repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Cantoriis a select chamber vocal ensemble comprising members from the larger Colleges Chorale; admission to the ensemble requires participation also in the Chorale. The 16-voiceCantoriperforms a wide range ofa cappellachoral literature, including each year a new work by a different distinguished American composer for the Cantori Commissioning Project.
