The Hobart and William Smith Colleges rowing teams will open their 2017-18 season on Sunday, Oct. 22, when they travel to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta. The Statesmen and Herons will compete in the men and womens collegiate eight events starting at 2:05 p.m. for the Statesmen and 2:39 p.m. for the Herons.
The Head of the Charles is the largest two-day regatta in the world. This is the 53rd year that rowers will race down the Charles River, which separates Boston from Cambridge, Mass. The race features 66 events, 790 clubs, 2,271 entries that compete on a 3-mile course that runs from Boston Universitys DeWolfe Boathouse to just short of Northeastern Universitys Henderson Boathouse.
Hobart will look to improve on last years sixth place finish. The Statesmen are looking to finish in the top 10 for the 12th consecutive season.
The Heron varsity eight last competed in the Head of the Charles in 2015, earning a 17th place finish. William Smith earned a bronze medal in 2013 and took home a silver medal in 2012. This years team is led by sophomore Elisabeth Rowedder, senior Nicole Guardino, senior Lizzy Houston, sophomore Bridget Kiejna, sophomore Annika Linden, first-year Lauren ODell, senior Elizabeth Warren, first-year Molly Dexter and sophomore Emma Lubrano.
In addition, Hobart and William Smith alumni/alumnae will each enter an alum eight in Saturdays men and womens alum eight events. Alum eight events are scheduled to begin at 12:59 p.m. for the Statesmen and 1:18 p.m. for the Herons.
