The Hobart and William Smith rowing teams competed at 54th Head of the Charles regatta in Boston on Sunday, Oct. 21, earning notable team distinctions for their respective boats.
The Statesmens varsity eight finished fourth in the mens collegiate eight event. It was the 12th time in the last 13 seasons that Hobart has finished in the top 10 in the event. Meanwhile, the Herons placed 16th in the womens collegiate eight event at the worlds largest two-day regatta.
In a 27-crew field, the Statesmens top boat maneuvered the three-mile Charles River course in a time of 16:06.302. As a result, Hobartmissed the podium by 46 hundredths of a second. The University of Michigan won the event with a time of 15:58.108. Hobart had the fastest time at the first two check points and were third at the final check point before the finish line.
In a 28-crew field, the Herons top boat placed 16th by crossing the finish line with a time of 19:52.188. Needing to finish in the top half of the field to qualify for next years regatta, William Smith will enter the lottery to return to the Charles in 2019.
In Saturdays alumni eight race, the Statesmen finished 22nd of 47 also earning a spot in next years regatta, traversing the course with a time of 16:28.555.
Heron alumnae competed in the alumnae eights event. William Smith finished 16th out of 38 teams, qualifying for next years regatta, traversing the course with a time of 18:55.287.
