In Money magazines sixth annualBest Colleges for Your Money rankings, Hobart and William Smith Colleges are included among the nations top colleges and universities for quality education, net cost and graduate outcomes.
Listed 34 among small schools and 157 overall, HWS rose more than 125 spots compared to last years rankings.
To be considered, a college had to have at least 500 students, reliable data and a graduation rate above the median for its institutional category. A total of 744 schools were ranked on 26 factors that fell into three overarching categories: quality of education, affordability and outcomes.
Quality of education is determined by graduation rates; the difference between a schools expected graduation rate and the actual rate; the test scores and yield of first year students; student-to-faculty ratio; an institutions financial status; and outcomes for Pell Grant recipients.
Affordability criteria include the net price of a degree; the price for students from families with income of $30,000 or less; student and parent debt; and the ability for students to repay that debt.
Outcomes are based on Payscale.coms graduate earnings information; College Scorecard employment information; and the percent of students who move from low-income backgrounds to upper-middle-class employment by their mid-30s.

Moneys rankings come just a week after Princeton Reviews Best 385 Colleges listed HWS as second in the nation for impact and third for study abroad. For the third year in a row in Best Colleges, HWS was named to the Professors Get High Marks list, ranking 13, while coming in at 20 for Most Politically Active. The Colleges were also named a Green College and included in Best Value Colleges and Colleges That Create Futures lists, ranking 15 for Best Alumni Network based on alumni activity and visibility on campus.
These recognitions follows several other national accolades, including aNo. 1 ranking two years runningas the top liberal arts institution for service inWashington Monthlys College Guide and Rankings.The Colleges rank third among small schools on the Peace Corps 2019 list ofTop Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities. In its 2019 rankings ofBest Value Colleges,the Washington, D.C.-based financial and business publisher Kiplinger listed Hobart and William Smith among the nations top colleges and universities.
