1 November 2019 HWS Advances to Championships

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges cross country teams will compete for the Liberty League Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The Statesmen begin their title chase at 11 a.m. with the Herons starting their pursuit at noon.

Hobart will run its sixth 8-kilometer race of the season. SeniorsWilliam FletcherandJosh Wassermanand first-yearJacob Appletonhave all run sub-28-minute 8k times this season. Appleton posted the teams fastest time of the season at the Hamilton Invitational, finishing 12th out of 102 runners in 27:00.7. Fletchers top time of the season is a 27:12.0 in the CCOC Championships, which placed him fourth in a field of 58. Wasserman ran a 27:40.2 in the CCOC, placing seventh.

The Statesmen finished eighth out of nine teams at the 2018 Liberty League Championships in Potsdam, N.Y. Among current Statesmen, Wasserman was the top finisher, posting a time of 27:21.4 to finish 60th out of 117 runners.

Over the past decade, Hobarts best finish at the conference championships came in 2009 and 2010 when the Statesmen finished sixth.

William Smith will run its fourth 6k of the season. The Herons have three runners that have clocked sub-26-minute times at 6k this year, sophomoresRuby AumanandMikayla Gullaceand first-yearGillian Parrett. Auman owns the teams fastest 6k at 25:08.2. Gullaces PR this season is a 25:39.6, while Parretts top 6k time is 25:44.4. All three top times came in the Mike Woods Invitational on Sept. 28.

At last years championships, William Smith was seventh out of nine teams. Among current Herons, Gullace was the top finisher, placing 78th out of 115 runners with a time of 24:54.9.

Over the past decade, William Smiths best finish at the conference championships came in 2011, 2012 and 2014 when the Herons were fifth.
