William Smith College senior goalie Sarah Honan was named the 2017 Markland Kelly Division III Goalkeeper of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association on Saturday, June 3, at the All-American Banquet held at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley, Md.

A first team IWLCA All-American and the Liberty League Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Honan finished her senior season third in the nation with a career-best 4.79 goals against average and sixth with career-high .571 save percentage. She set a program record with her 20 victories in goal this year, while her goals against average ranks second on the William Smith single season list.

Honan was named to the Liberty League, ECAC North and IWLCA Empire Region first teams and was tabbed the ECAC North Defensive Player of the Year. She earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Tournament Team and was tabbed the MVP after stopping 22 shots in two tournament games, including a season-high matching 12 saves in the semifinal, leading the Herons to their second straight Liberty League title.

In 73 career games, Honan posted a 46-25 record as well as a 7.43 goals against average, 523 saves and a .512 save percentage. She finished her career ranked third in wins and saves and fourth in career goals against average. Honan is also tied for 12th on the Heron list for career ground balls (157) and ranks 12th in career caused turnovers (63).

The Herons finished the year with a 20-2 overall record and a 9-0 mark in the Liberty League. The Herons advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.

Honan is the fourth Heron to be named an IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year. William Smiths Courtney Hutchinson (1992), Leslie Khachadourian (2000) and Rebecca Splain (2004) were also IWLCA Goalkeepers of the Year.

Honan graduated magna cum laude in economics. She is currently being certified in the basics of officiating lacrosse and is planning to pursue a master's degree in accounting.
