As fall arrives on campus, Hobart and William Smith are gearing up to celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend on Sept. 15-17. The annual tradition will bring together members of the HWS community to participate in a variety of entertaining and educational activities for all ages. In addition to opportunities to meet newly appointed President Gregory J. Vincent 83, there will be mini-college courses offered by faculty, campus open houses, Quad-a-Palooza, Fall Nationals, and home sporting events for both Hobart and William Smith athletics. Homecoming and Family Weekend is a great opportunity for families to get together with their students, as well as faculty and staff on the HWS campus, says Director of Parent Relations Kelly Young P16. Last year more than 3,000 people participated, and we are getting ready for another great turnout with a weekend of excellent programming.
Attendees can start Saturday morning with a mini-college session taught by members of the faculty. This years courses are: Recent Weather Disasters, Is there an app for that? What Smartphones can (and cannot) do to help you learn a new language, Integrating Mindfulness into the College Classroom, Empowerment through Embodiment: A Taste of Theatre for Social Change Techniques and Teaching Entrepreneurship to a 21st Century Audience.
Parents and families will receive a formal introduction to President Vincent as he gives his first State of the Colleges address at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Vandervort Room of the Scandling Campus Center.
Another new chapter in the Colleges history of athletics and scholarship will take place during the Tennis Court Dedication, where three courts will be named in honor of Trustee Allison Morrow 76, Edgar B. Hebard 60, and Honorary Trustee L. Thomas Melly 52, L.H.D. 02 and Judith H. Melly L.H.D. 16 for their leadership in giving. The Tennis Court renovations were also made possible by the contributions of Heron and Statesmen donors.
Art and cultural opportunities are available throughout the weekend, such as an art exhibition by Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Alysia Kaplan titled The White Rush of Experience on display all day Friday at the Davis Gallery at Houghton House. A talk on Kaplans work will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
On Saturday afternoon, Composing Works: Music and Dance Collaborations with Professor of Dance Donna Davenport and Associate Professor of Music Mark Olivieri will take place at 4 p.m. in Deming Theatre. The performance will be themed improvisations by dancers and musicians. Saturday will also feature Fall Nationals, a soap box derby tradition in which students, faculty and staff compete to see whose homemade cars can hold up as they glide down Winn-Seeley Hill in pursuit of the Championship Trophy.
Registration and the full schedule for Homecoming 2017, is availableonline through Sept. 12. The Scandling Campus Center will serve as Homecoming and Family Weekend headquarters from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
