The William Smith lacrosse team was voted 17th in the nation by the International Womens Lacrosse Coaching Association forits performance during the 2018 season, which ended at 15-5 overall and advancement to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The association also honored midfielder Melissa Moore 18 and defender Mekayla Montgomery 21 with spots on their All-America teams.
Moore, a sociology and public policy double-major, led the Heronswith 50 goals and 75 points this season. She was previously honored twice by all-region selection and three times by the Liberty League. In addition to her achievements on the lacrosse field, Moore studied abroad in Prague during her junior year.
Montgomery, a psychology major who transferred to the Colleges last fall, led the teamwith 67 draw controls and now ranks second in the teams history for draw controls in a single season, just coming five below the all-time record.
The International Womens Lacrosse recognition coincides with honors for Sarah Benyo 18, an attack for the Herons recently named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America At-Large first team.
A biology major who will attend Penn State College of Medicine this fall, Benyo is the 46th HWS student honored in the awards history. She was previously named a CoSIDA Academic All-District and made the Liberty League All-Academic team for three consecutive years. Benyo, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, scored 30 goals andhad eight assists for 38 points during her last season.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her current institution.
Hobart and William Smith student-athletes have earned more than 45 Academic All-America awards since the program started in 1952.
