The William Smith College sailing team will be back on the water on Wednesday, May 19, when it heads to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the 2021 College Sailing Womens National Championship.
Eighteen teams will begin competition on Wednesday for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy which is awarded to the national champion. The womens championship will be the first of three events hosted by the yacht clubs that make up Annapolis Harbor. The regatta has been condensed to a two-day event held without the typical semifinal format.
William Smith will compete against Boston College, Brown, College of Charleston, George Washington, Georgetown, Jacksonville, Old Dominion, St. Marys College (Md.), Stanford, Tufts, Tulane, UC Santa Barbara, Rhode Island, South Florida, Texas, Coast Guard and Navy.
In 2019, William Smith finished 17th in Newport, R.I.Kate Cox20, Kate Homet 19,Anna Flaherty20 andCailin Genslersailed in B Division, finishing 12th with 179 points. They combined for seven top-ten finishes in 16 races. Bailey Carter 19,Sarah Smith, Flaherty andBridget Lawlesscompeted in A Dvision, placing 16th with 201 points.
Brown is the defending national champion. Harvard and Yale, which joined the Bears on the podium in 2019, will not compete at this years regatta.
This is William Smiths 20th trip to the national championship since 1999. The Herons best finish at the regatta came in 2018 when it was third in a field of 18 teams. Carter and Haley Okun 18 won A Division that year.
