The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team competed at a pair of regattas in Maryland this past weekend. Heron Sailors finished third at the St. Marys Womens Interconference and the Colleges finished fifth at the Graham Hall Team Race.
In St. Marys City, the Herons finished third out of 18 teams. In 14 races William Smith compiled 180 points, eight behind second place Harvard. Yale won the regatta with 150 points. JuniorKate Cox,seniorKate Hometand sophomoreCailin Genslerwon B Division with 73 points, one ahead of the Crimson and two ahead of Georgetown. Cox sailed with Homet in races 1-6 and Gensler in 7-14. They crossed the line in the top 10 in all but two races on the weekend, finishing inside the top three eight times. SeniorBailey Carter, sophomoreBridget Lawless, Homet and first-yearSarah Smithrepresented William Smith in A Division. They were sixth with 107 points, one behind George Washington. Competing as crew, Lawless sailed in the first six races, Homet sailed in races 7-10 and Smith competed in races 11-14. They finished in the top 10 in 11 of the 14 races.
In Annapolis, the Colleges finished fifth of 16 teams. HWS posted a 9-6 overall record, tying with Roger Williams and the St. Marys College of Md. HWS won the tie-breaker by virtue of scoring the fewest points in head-to-head competition with the Hawks and Seahawks. In the round robin, the Colleges defeated College of Charleston, George Washington, Harvard, St. Marys, Old Dominion, Cornell, Merchant Marine, SUNY Maritime and Christopher Newport. Yale won the regatta with a 14-1 overall record.
HWS will be back in action next weekend, March 23-24, for a pair of regattas. The Colleges will be in Throggs Neck, N.Y. for the Admiral Moore Team Race and Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational.
