The sixth-ranked William Smith College sailing team will be in Throggs Neck, N.Y., this weekend for the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Womens Championships. The Herons are looking to defend their 2018 MAISA crown and compete for a spot in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Womens National Championship.
Seventeen teams will descend on Throggs Neck, for this years regatta. The top nine teams will qualify for the ICSA Womens National Championship which will be held May 21-24 in Newport, R.I. This weekend, William Smith will be joined by Christopher Newport, Columbia, No. 7 Cornell, Drexel, Fordham, No. 8 George Washington, No. 17 Georgetown, No. 14 Navy, Old Dominion, UPenn, Princeton, SUNY Maritime, Stony Brook, St. Marys, Syracuse, and Virginia.
Last year in Norfolk, Va., the Herons won their fourth MAISA Womens Championship. They finished the weekend with 88 points, one ahead of Georgetown. The regatta was tightly contested throughout the weekend and came down to the final race on Sunday. With 80 points, William Smith needed to finish eighth or better to claim the conference crown.Kate CoxandSarah Warren 18finished eighth bringing the conference crown back to Geneva. Cox and Warren won B Division with 47 points. They were in the top 10 in all 11 races.Bailey Carter,Haley Okun18, andAnna Flahertysailed in A Division. They were second with 41 points.
HWS will also be in action at the Admirals Cup in Kings Point, N.Y. this weekend.
