1 February 2019 Heron and Statesman Standouts

The Hobart and William Smith squash teams are back in action for 2019 with some standout members. On Jan. 28, Heron Gabby Fraser 20 was named the Liberty League Womens Squash Performer of the Week and Statesman Mohamed Abdelhafez 22 was named the Liberty League Mens Squash Rookie of the Week by the conference office.

Fraser has returned to the lineup after spending the fall semester in the Colleges study abroad program in China. She was 2-1 in the No. 1 spot for the Herons last weekend at the Mount Holyoke Round Robin in South Hadley, Mass. Fraser picked up wins against No. 19 Bates and No. 17 Tufts. In Saturdays first match, she defeated the Bobcats Kristyna Alexova, 13-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4. Against the Jumbos, she bested Claire Davidson in five games, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 8-11, 11-8.

This is the fourth time this season that Abdelhafez has been honored as the conferences top rookie. Abdelhafez was 2-0 in the No. 1 spot for the Statesmen in South Hadley, Mass., over the weekend. In Hobarts match against No. 20 Bates, he rolled to an 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 win over Graham Bonnell. The Bobcats beat the Statesmen 7-2. In the second match of the day, Abdelhafez collected Hobarts only point, knocking off Raghav Kumar, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10. He holds a team best 8-5 record this season, with a 3-2 mark in the No. 1 spot.

On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, William Smith will travel to Canton, N.Y., for the 2019 Liberty League Championships. The Herons will take on Bard and Vassar on Saturday and St. Lawrence on Sunday. The Statesmen will also play this weekend in the Liberty League Championships in Canton. Hobart will take on Rochester and Bard on Saturday and Vassar and St. Lawrence on Sunday.
