Geneva 2020, the community-wide initiative to increase graduation rates, improve literacy, boost college and career readiness, and ensure every child enters school ready to learn, was the center of an hour-long conversation on WXXI radios Connections with Evan Dawson on Thursday, April 6.
Guests of the noon-hour segment were Hobart and William Smith President Mark D. Gearan, Geneva City School Superintendent Trina Newton and Geneva City Manager Matt Horn. A recording of theGeneva 2020 discussion that airedis available online. The show was broadcast on WEOS 89.5 in Geneva and WXXI-AM 1370 and WRUR-FM 88.5 in Rochester.
The conversation on Connections coincides with Geneva 2020s recent unveiling of its community report, which provides key updates regarding its ongoing momentum. Gearan, Newton and Horn addressed the initiatives recent successes.
Geneva 2020, which was founded on the collective impact model, brings together all facets of the community, including for-profits, non-profits, faith communities and others to ensure students have the skills they need to graduate from high school and effectively pursue college degrees and careers. Hobart and William Smith serve as the anchor organization.
Geneva 2020 was a key factor that led to Genevas designation in 2015 as an All-America City, a highly-selective honor awarded annually by the National Civic League to only 10 cities across the country.
In addition, the Geneva City School District (GCSD) was recently awarded a highly competitive, federally funded $5.85 million 21st Century Learning Center Grant that will support a wide range of programming, including reinforcing collaborations with HWS to support the educational success of local students.
