Hobart fraternity brothers reflected on their community service efforts as they kicked off spring recruitment with a Meet the Greeks event on Monday, Jan. 29 in Scandling Campus Center. At Mondays event, fraternity members shared information about their missions including work within the community.

With the expansion of the Greek community this fall, Hobart fraternities finished last semester with numerous contributions to local and national nonprofit organizations, and the campus and local community. They raised money for cancer research, participated in the Colleges Days of Service, and championed programs for civil rights and gender equality.

Community outreach activities so far this academic year have included:

Alpha Phi Alpha:

Establishing its first chapter at Hobart this year, Alpha Phi Alpha is developing three initiatives to increase voter turnout and graduation rates in the Geneva community. The chapter also joins its national organization in supporting Project Alpha, an initiative dedicated to providing social support to young men between the ages of 12 and 15.

Chi Phi

Philanthropic efforts for Chi Phi included fundraisers for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and assisting at Neighbors Night, a Geneva afterschool program for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Brothers also participated in Days of Service events, working with community members at St. Peters Church and the Colleges Emergency Medical Services. Chi Phi also hosted a Title IX seminar to promote the Colleges Culture of Respect.

Delta Chi

Celebrating the chapters 70th anniversary, Delta Chi spent the semester championing Cure Histio, a campaign to fund research for the rare cancer Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), most common of the histiocytic disorders which occurs when the body accumulates too many immature Langerhans cells.

Kappa Alpha

The brothers of Kappa Alpha hosted their annual KA Basketball Tournament, raising more than $1,200 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The chapter also planted trees in local parks as a Day of Service project and honored those who died on September 11, 2001, with 2,996 American flags on the Quad.

Kappa Sigma

Last semester, Kappa Sigma brothers volunteered during Day of Service and at the Community Lunch Program. Currently planning their spring softball tournament to benefit breast cancer research, the brothers also participated in the HWS Greek Leadership Academy.

Phi Sigma Kappa

The Phi Sigma Kappa chapter volunteered at a variety of afterschool programs in the Geneva area and with the Salvation Army during their holiday fundraising. The brothers are currently planning fundraisers for the spring semester as well.

Sigma Chi

Sigma Chi brothers participated in Day of Service, during which they helped to clean Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua, N.Y. With an educational goal, the members hosted an alcohol workshop, masculinity workshop and the Title IX My Masculinity Helps panel documentary. Brothers of Sigma Chi also volunteered for Festival of Nations, in conjunction with the Geneva City School District.

Theta Delta Chi

Members of Theta Delta Chi hosted their annual Pig Roast and raised $694 for Crohns Disease and Habitat for Humanity of Ontario County.
