Members of the HWS and Geneva communities have the chance to enjoy an upcoming choral concert performed by the Hobart and William Smith Community Chorus in November.
The HWS Community Chorus, directed by Ben Johns, will perform at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Presbyterian Church, 24 Park Place, Geneva.
The chorus includes students, faculty and staff at the Colleges, and members from the surrounding community. The 50-voice ensemble performs major works from a standard repertoire as well as lesser-known works deserving wider familiarity.
Recent programs have included extended works by Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Gabriel Faur, Ottorino Respighi, Sir Edward Elgar, Aaron Copland, Benjamin Britten and Randall Thompson.
Last month, the Colleges Chorale and Cantori, directed by Professor of Music Robert Cowles, offered a concert on Saturday, Oct. 29. The performance, which featured 20th and 21st century U.S. works, was held in Froelich Hall in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts.
The performance featured Dominick Argento's "I Hate and I Love" for mixed chorus and percussion. There was also works by Samuel Barber, Vincent Persichetti, Earl George and Halsey Stevens.
The Colleges Chorale is a 30-member ensemble that performs a wide range of a cappella choral works, including a repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present day. The Colleges Cantori is a smaller 15-voice group comprised of members from the Colleges Chorale.
The concerts are free and open to the public; donations are gratefully accepted.
