16 March 2017 Experiencing NYC Media and Communications

NYC_MediaDay_1As part of the Colleges Media and Communications Career Trip, a group of 18 students traveled to New York City over spring break to meet with alums, parents and recruiters who are leaders in a wide range of careers in sales, marketing, advertising, media and public relations.

Students experienced firsthand how their liberal arts education can translate into the media and communications fields, and they networked with employers who seek candidates who can solve problems creatively, write well, analyze challenges from multiple perspectives and adapt to new situations, says Jackie Doyle P14, P19, associate director of the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education.

Doyle explains that the trip which is facilitated by the Salisbury Center was held during spring break to better align with the hiring cycle of the industry, giving students the opportunity to not only refine their media and communications career pathway, but also to maximize their opportunity for networking and potential job opportunities. This year, the trip was scheduled to expand to include two full days of programming to showcase a broader range of career opportunities in the industry but the second day of the trip was cancelled due to Winter Storm Stella.

NYC_MediaDay_4Monday, March 13, kicked off at the marketing firm IPG Mediabrands, where students met with Courtney Aquadro 15, Alexander Everett 15, Zachary Frantz 13, Leila Gibney 09, Alexandra Hancock 10, Brian McMahon P10, Don Morrison P07 and Haley Wolf 15. Students then traveled to AppBoy, a mobile marketing company, to meet with Recruiter Wendy Hankemeier, followed by a visit to the global public relations agency Zeno Group, where Jacqueline Cox 05 hosted students.

The afternoon site visits focused on advertising. Students visited the ad agency Merkley & Partners, where they heard from Mason Barron 15, Alexander Gellert 86 and Emily Jaeckel 15. The group then headed to Horizon Media, one of New Yorks largest media agencies, where they were hosted by Alexandra Haack 09, Michael Shore 15 and Daniel Thomas 12, and met with Recruiter Shayna Walker.

During winter break, the Salisbury Center also took students to New York City to learn about careers in the finance sector as part of the NYC Finance Experience Program, as well as careers in media on the Behind the Scenes NYC career exploration program that on alternate years goes to Los Angeles. The Day on the Hill program is an annual three-day event in Washington, D.C.
