An attorney, former police officer and lifelong athlete, Judy Davis 88 was recently profiled in the Providence Journal as she bikes across America to create an Aquatics Endowment for the Boys and Girls Club of Providence, R.I. Her route will connect with history, most notably on the Lewis and Clark trail in Montana and North Dakota, and along the Erie Canal in New York State.
Last month, Davis shipped her bicycle to Oregon and began a 4,000-mile journey of a lifetime back to her home state of Rhode Island. Davis told the Providence Journal that she picked her route using the Adventure Cycling Associations details about campgrounds, hotels, motels, grocery stores and bike shops for 47,283 miles of bicycle routes in North America. Along the way, she will visit other Boys and Girls Clubs and keep the Providence kids updated through her online journal.
While Davis always dreamed of going cross country, she never imagined shed do it on a bike. She began biking several years ago and recently decided to combine her passion with a lifelong dream. In planning for her journey, a new goal was born: complete the ride and raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Providence.
Why the Boys and Girls Club? Well, simply put, I love their mission, Davis writes on her fundraising page. Over the past few years I have been participating in a masters swim program at the Fox Point Club in Providence and over the course of that time Ive gotten to know the staff and see their dedication to helping the citys youth grow physically and intellectually.
As an adult swimmer, Davis learned that urban children are statistically more likely to drown than kids who grow up with easy access to swimming and lessons. Whether you are helping provide kids with swimming lessons teaching life-saving skills to our beginner swimmers, or helping provide an area to practice for our more experienced swimmers, together, we are helping teach our kids important life skills in a safe and nurturing environment, writes Davis.
Before she began her ride, Davis had raised $40,000 for the Boys and Girls Club; she hopes by journeys end to reach $100,000.
While a police officer with the City of East Providence, Davis earned a J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law. She then spent eight years as a state prosecutor working for the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General, where she was a special attorney general in the Criminal Division. There, she handled hundreds of criminal matters includingdriving while intoxicated, assault, robbery, breaking and entering, sexual assault and murder. She also served as the deputy director of the Departments Medicaid Fraud Control Unit prosecuting fraud and patient abuse in Medicaid-funded facilities.
Before opening her own practice, Law Office of Judy Davis, LLC., in 2014, Davis worked in the financial services and title insurance industries, including for the MassMutual Financial Group as well as the Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company.
Davis graduated from William Smith College with a B.A. in political science and was a member of the lacrosse and soccer teams. In her community, she has served on various boards and committees, including the Rhode Island Juvenile Justice Commission and as a past president of the Rhode Island Womens Golf Association and current board member of the Rhode Island Golf Association.
