This January, The Loop, a short story by Kelly Craig 16, was published in Bodega, an online literary magazine.
The Loop is set in Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada, Craigs hometown. Red Rock Canyon is a National Conservation Area that features a 13-mile scenic drive. To drive the canyons scenic loop, you have to drive on a one-way road and end up just where you started: there was a lot of potential in that to express the circularity of journeys that so often appears in narratives both imagined and real of Las Vegas, Craig says.
The Loop was drafted as part of Craigs Honors project, What Happens Here Stays Here: Sense of Place and Identity in Las Vegas Literature, under the direction of Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature Kathryn Cowles. In her research, Craig found that few authors were writing stories about Las Vegas locals and as a local, she wanted to add her voice.
Craig graduated summa cum laude in English and served as the William Smith student speaker at Commencement. On campus, Craig was a founding member of the First Generation Initiative, a member of Hai Timiai William Smith Honor Society, president of the Colleges Chorale and s participant in Public Leadership Education Network events.
While my HWS education has given me what seem like infinite opportunities, the most important thing I have taken away is the confidence to imagine myself as the person I want to be, and to make that image a reality, she reflects.
Craig currently works at Lindamood Bell Learning Processes, a company that works with students of all ages to develop sensory cognitive processing skills that help with communication. She is also applying to Ph.D. programs in literature and has written another short story Driving South on Any Road, which was published in Litro Magazine in September.
