Hobart College first-yearChase Carrawaywill be in action this weekend, Nov. 3-4, representing the Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team at the LaserPerformance Mens Singlehanded Nationals in Holland, Mich.
Caraway will be one of 18 sailors competing for the Glen S. Foster Trophy at this weekends national championship hosted by Hope College and Grand Valley State University. He will compete against sailors from Boston College, Brown, Christopher Newport, College of Charleston, Georgetown, Harvard, Jacksonville, Marquette, Merchant Marine, Oregon State, St. Marys, Stanford, Texas A&M Galveston, USC, Wisconsin and Yale.
Carraway earned a spot in this weekends national championship with a third place finish at the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the MAISA Mens Singlehanded Championship. He finished the weekend with 56 points, one behind Thomas McCann of Georgetown and five behind Leo Boucher of St. Marys College. Carraway led the regatta heading into Sundays final four races. On the weekend, he crossed the line in the top 10 in 13 races, collecting three victories and six second place finishes.
Carraway advanced to the Carl Van Duyne Trophy with a victory at the Laser North. He finished the weekend with 37 points, claiming victory by 14 points. Carraway crossed the line in the top five in all 14 races, finishing first six times.
Carraway is the first Statesman to advance to the singlehanded national championships since Sam Blouin 12 competed in the 2011 championship. Blouin finished eighth overall. He also competed at the singlehanded championship in 2010, finishing 15th. Arielle deLisser 14 and Brooke Lyon 14 competed at the womens singlehanded national championships in 2013, finishing second and ninth, respectively.
