25 September 2018 Carraway 22 Qualifies for Singlehanded Nationals

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team was in action at three regattas this past weekend. Hobart first-yearsChase CarrawayandJake Vickerswere at the Carl Van Duyne, MAISA Mens Singlehanded Championship, in Annapolis, Md. Carraway finished third overall, earning a spot at the College Sailing Singlehanded Nationals in Holland, Mich., Nov. 2-4. The Colleges also competed in a pair of top nine regattas co-hosted by Georgetown and George Washington in Washington, D.C.

In Annapolis, Carraway placed third in a field of 18 sailors to clinch one of five spots at the singlehanded national championship. He finished third with 56 points, one point behind Thomas McCann of Georgetown and five behind Leo Boucher of St. Marys College (Md.). Carraway led the regatta heading into Sundays final four races. On the weekend, he crossed the line in the top 10 in 13 races, collecting three victories and six second place finishes. Vickers just missed a qualifying spot, placing sixth overall. He ended the weekend with 113 points. Vickers was in the top 10 in nine races and notched a victory right out of the gate on Saturday in the days very first race.

At the coed regatta in D.C., the Colleges finished seventh out of nine teams, compiling 290 points on the weekend. Fourteen races were competed with both A and B Division sailing in one combined Division. JuniorMichael Mungerand first-yearTory Miletiwere seventh with 114 points. They had 10 top-10 finishes, including a third place finish in the 11th race. JuniorPierre Thibodeauand sophomoreAidan Morganwere 15th with 176 points.

In the Womens regatta, the Herons finished tied for fourth with Navy with 236 points. The Midshipmen were awarded fourth place due to the tiebreaker. JuniorKate Coxand sophomoreCailin Genslerwere eighth with 109 points. They won the third race and compiled eight top ten finishes. First-yearClaire Siegel-Wilsonand sophomoreAudrey Morinwere ninth with 127 points. They posted seven top 10 finishes.

The Colleges will be back on the water for three regattas next weekend, Sept. 28-29. HWS will be at the MAISA Match Race Championship in Kings Point, N.Y., and at the Danmark Trophy in New London, Conn. William Smith sailors will be at the ICSA Womens Fall Showcase in St. Marys City, Md.
