Kim Blacklock 79, actor, activist and CEO of H. G. Fairfield Arts Center, returned to HWS to meet with students as part of the Professionals in Residence series hosted by theSalisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education.
On Monday, Oct. 17, Blacklock delivered a talk, A Career in Acting, Activism and Education, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 18 and 19, she met with students and sat in on classes in a wide variety of disciplines, including of religious studies, media and society, womens studies, education and public policy.
While on campus, she also delivered a public presentation, a performance with students in the lobby of Scandling Campus Center, and had meals with Mosaic NY students, Media & Society students and her former mentor Professor of Education Charles Temple, as well as attended a William Smith Rugby Club practice and other campus functions.
As an actor, Blacklock has held movie roles in The Power of Few(2013) with Christopher Walken, Christian Slater and Anthony Anderson, and in The Congressman(2016) with Treat Williams, Elizabeth Marvel and George Hamilton.
DuringHomecoming and Family Weekend 2016, Blacklockreturned to Genevato host a screening of The Congressman at the Smith Opera House with former U.S. Congressman Robert Mrazek, who wrote the films script and is a co-director. Nancy Zises P92, P93 is executive producer and Fred Roos (CoppolasThe Godfatherseries and more) is a producer.
At 16, Blacklock was the first female admitted to West Point by mistake, inspiring her sponsor, U.S. Senator Sam Stratton, to introduce the bill in 1974 that passed in 1976 allowing women to apply for admission to U.S. military academies.
As a co-founder of the former Seneca Womens Peace Encampment in Romulus, N.Y., Blacklock has worked against nuclear proliferation and for women, children, veterans and their health needs.
Since 2010, she has served as the CEO ofH. G. Fairfield Arts Centerfor the Environment, which enters its fourth year with the Young Filmmakers Atelier in New York States second largest middle school and its third year in partnership with a 94 year-old year-round residential and day outdoor educationcenter and retreat in Patterson, N.Y., which serves 8,000 youth.
At William Smith, Blacklock majored in English, with time away at Rutgers University playing Division 1-AIAW basketball and playing for the Minnesota Fillies in the nations first professional Womens Basketball League. Blacklock went on to teach in the first bilingual-bicultural school in the U.S., the French-American School of New York and worked on her masters degree in motor learning biobehaviorial sciences at Columbia Universitys Teachers College.
