Vanessa Gorsuch '06 of Bronx, N.Y., recently joined the Louisiana Delta Service Corps, one of more than 400 AmeriCorps National Service affiliates.
While an HWS student, she made two trips to St. Bernard's Parish, La., to help those recovering from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and participated in the trip shortly after her May 14 graduation, when she received a bachelor's degree in individual studies (writing and rhetoric) and the President's Public Service Award.
Gorsuch also wrote and delivered the local news in the afternoon during NPR's All Thing's Considered on WEOS-FM, the HWS radio station.
LDSC creates opportunities for AmeriCorps members across the Louisiana Delta region to perform vital service in neighborhoods and communities. Participants address education, health, and housing needs. Up to 45 members are selected to serve individually or in teams at local public or nonprofit organizations, according to the LDSC Web site.
