President Mark Gearan was featured in the Dec. 9 Boston Globe, in an article titled Looking Beyond Academia, on political people becoming top executives, particularly in academe. According to the article, a study released by the American Council on Education, or ACE, shows that 15 percent of college presidents in 2001 reported that they came to the job straight from a corporate, legal, or government position, almost double the number that did in 1998, when only 8 percent of presidents came from outside the academic world.
