28 January 2026 Exploring Financial Careers in NYC

From speaking with alumni to hearing from industry leaders, HWS students explored investment banking, asset management, analytics and more.

During winter break, Hobart and William Smith students connected with more than 40 alumni and explored careers in finance at top institutions—Bank of America, Bloomberg, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, HSBC, S&P Global, BlackRock, Rithm Capital, Evercore and CHUBB—through the New York City Finance Trek. Hosted by the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Learning, the program offered valuable insights into the opportunities available in the finance industry.

Joined by Professor of Economics Feisal Khan and Salisbury Center Senior Associate Director Shayne Feinberg P'17, P'20, students visited business headquarters and offices throughout the city to hear directly from alumni about their careers and experiences.

“This trek is a great experience for students who are just starting to prepare for a career in finance,” says Khan. “Not only are they exposed to the range of firms and jobs in finance and connect with so many of our successful young alumni, but they realize that their HWS education makes them extremely well-qualified and competitive for important finance internships and future jobs.”

The majority of students in attendance were part of HWS’ Finance Society, a program through the Salisbury Center that helps students interested in a career in finance get a jumpstart with weekly meetings to develop their resume, refine their personal pitch, develop networking strategies and prepare for interviews. Additional opportunities for technical skills training and meeting with alumni in the field are also available.

Alessandra Gialanella ’28, a politics major planning to attend law school, enjoyed learning about the unique paths alumni had going into the financial world.

“The trek allowed me to expand my networking circle and to personally connect with such amazing alumni who were so kind and willing to help me as I explore future career paths,” says Gialanella. “This trek was beyond a networking experience, but a successful educational experience. I learned that there is still so much left to explore in the world of finance.”

For Nicholas Dimatos ’28, an economics and business management and entrepreneurship double major, the trek provided a rare opportunity to experience financial workplaces.

“What made me want to attend was to familiarize myself with the firms and get comfortable being in a work setting while learning more about the different positions within the finance industry,” he says.

Two students on the trek, Olivia Wilkins ’28 and Daniel Cano ’28, will build on this experience in the summer as they participate in the Nomura Early Careers Summit Series, gaining mentorship and technical training in the world of finance.

In addition to visiting these locations, the students also took part in the Tri-State New Year’s Reception at the New York Yacht Club, where they connected with alumni and grew their networks.
