Five-member volunteer board created to safeguard open space and environmental assets.

Edward G. Mooney ’77 has been appointed to the inaugural board of the newly created Greenway Commission in Clarkstown—the first commission of its kind in Rockland County, N.Y., designed to protect open space and preserve historic and environmental resources for future generations.

Officially designated by the Town Board on Feb. 10, the five-member volunteer commission will advise the town on land conservation, evaluate projects and serve as a forum for community input on planning and sustainability initiatives. Early priorities include shaping the future of the historic Storms Tavern property in Valley Cottage.

“I am honored to be appointed on the initial five-member board to engage our community in preserving and enhancing our natural environment,” Mooney says. "Our first meeting will take place on March 2, with plans to host an open community forum soon after to gather input and ideas.”

Coverage of the announcement appeared in Rockland Daily, highlighting the commission’s role in reinforcing Clarkstown’s commitment to environmental stewardship, historic preservation and quality of life.

At Hobart and William Smith, Mooney is a member of the President’s Leadership Council and an active regional volunteer and supporter of HWS Athletics, the Annual Fund and the Kappa Alpha Endowed Scholarship in Memory of William H. Billings ’44. As a student, Mooney majored in anthropology with a baccalaureate essay in political science. He played soccer and lacrosse, and was a member of Kappa Alpha. Mooney served as co-chair of his 40th reunion in 2017 and received an Alumni Citation.
