14 July 2026 Career Trek Leads to Congressional Internship

After visiting Capitol Hill with Career Services, Bella Diamandis ’28 is spending the summer interning in Congressman Jim McGovern's district office.

For Diamandis, the opportunity aligns with both her long-term career goals and her commitment to issues she cares deeply about, including efforts to end childhood hunger.

"I am seeing firsthand how government can make an impact in people's lives," says the politics major, who credits her coursework at Hobart and William Smith with preparing her for the role.

"All of the classes that I have taken have given me the valuable skills and experience that fully prepared me for this opportunity," she says.

Her path to the internship was shaped in part by Career Services' Day on the Hill career trek to Washington, D.C., where she joined fellow students in meeting HWS alumni working in government and public service. During the visit, she toured the U.S. Capitol with Representative McGovern, Associate Professor of Politics DeWayne Lucas and President Mark D. Gearan.

Although she had long envisioned a career in government, meeting McGovern affirmed her interest in congressional service and inspired her to pursue an internship with his office.

Gearan, who worked in government for a number of years including in the White House as Communications Director and Deputy Chief of Staff, also played a key role in helping Diamandis secure the opportunity by introducing her to McGovern, writing a letter of recommendation and sharing insights into careers in public service.

"President Gearan gave me invaluable advice about both the application process and the experience itself," she says.

After graduating, Diamandis plans to attend law school and pursue a career in government, ideally serving in a federal agency or as general counsel.

"This internship allows me to gain experience and knowledge in the field that I intend to pursue after both my undergraduate degree and any further degrees," she says.

Diamandis encourages students interested in public service to take advantage of the opportunities available through Career Services, crediting staff members Isabelle Strong and Julia Walsh Postler for their guidance.
